York EMC Services Ltd recently hosted a FOR-EMC Workshop, (the Forum of Laboratories for implementing EU Electromagnetic Compatibility Directive). FOR-EMC is an initiative funded by the EU Competitive and Sustainable Growth Programme. Its purpose is to encourage shared learning and knowledge transfer concerning the EMC Directive, with the aim of preparing candidate states for the implementation of the EMC Directive.
The forum is the first attempt to found a network of EMC laboratories on a European scale, allowing both the Department of Electronics and York EMC Services Ltd the opportunity to showcase their EMC expertise to EU candidate states looking to learn from their experience.
Day 1: 25 FOR-EMC delegates arrive in sunny York for their two-day ultimate EMC experience

Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Brian Cantor, delivers the welcome speech to the FOR-EMC delegates. His talk focussed on the University, its links to the City of York and its standing within the wider research community.
Nick Wainwright (Operations Director, York EMC Services Ltd, left) introduces the group to Dave Imeson (Compliance Europe Ltd), a guest speaker at the workshop.
The group participate in a tour with EMC demonstrations at York EMC Service’s UKAS accredited test laboratory in Castleford.

The FOR-EMC group enjoy an evening meal in a typical Yorkshire restaurant, courtesy of York EMC Services Ltd. Delegates from Poland, Greece, Slovenia, Finland, France (and many more countries) and York (of course!) learn to make toasts in various European languages and a most enjoyable evening is had by all. Andy Marvin, Department of Electronics, University of York, made the after dinner speech.
The FOR-EMC event was a great success thanks to the organisational efforts of York EMC Services Ltd and most importantly, the participation and enthusiasm of those who took part. Thanks to all those who made it to York and hope to see you all again, perhaps at our International Conference and Exhibition, EMC York 2004.
The next FOR-EMC meeting is to take place in Oslo in June.
