COST 286 Project
COST is an intergovernmental framework for European Co-operation in the field of Scientific and Technical Research. A new website has recently been launched in relation to the COST286 project, which will investigate EMC in diffused communications systems.
York EMC participates in FOR-EMC project
York EMC Services Ltd is pleased to be involved in the EU funded project, FOR-EMC. The project consists of a network of European EMC laboratories and aims to prepare laboratories in the Candidate States for the process of implementation of the EMC Directive.

Proposal for a revised EMC Directive published
In December 2002, the European Commission published its formal proposal for a revised EMC Directive [pdf] (158 kB). This document is published as COM (2002) 759 and is expected to be considered by the European Parliament and Council during 2003.

York EMC Services has launched a new five-day intensive short course entitled EMC and Electrical Safety for Electro-medical Equipment and the Hospital Environment. For details of course dates, please contact enquiry@yorkemc.co.uk.
York EMC Services launches second Comb Generator Emitter
York EMC Services is pleased to announce the launch the CGE02, the second in the comb generator emitter range. The CGE02 is a broadband comb generator covering the frequency range 250MHz to 26GHz and has been designed for use by manufacturers of computer enclosures.
York EMC Services gains accreditation for LVD testing
York EMC Services' Donibristle laboratory has been granted accreditation by UKAS for testing to the Low Voltage Directive (LVD). The initial accreditation is for BS EN 60950:2000, covering the safety of information technology equipment.
Shortcoming in safety standard identified
A shortcoming [pdf] (79 kB) in safety standard EN60335-2-29 used in conjunction with EN60335-1 has been notified to the Commission. The standard, which provides particular safety requirements for toasters, grills, roasters and similar portable cooking appliances, has been found to inadequately address the issue of functional safety in terms of the protection against electromagnetic disturbances.
York EMC Services launches the harmonics and flicker generator
York EMC Services is pleased to announce the launch of the harmonics and flicker generator, HFG01. The device is designed to allow EMC test laboratories who carry out measurements to EN61000-3-2 and EN61000-3-3 to verify their test equipment.
Generic standards set for change
The existing generic standards are being re-numbered with the first of the changes taking place in April 2002. As Nick Wainwright explains, in some cases this is not just a simple re-numbering exercise.

On-line screening effectiveness calculator
The Department of Electronics at the University of York has developed a free to use on-line tool to calculate the screening effectiveness of an enclosure containing an aperture.

York EMC Services Ltd is pleased to announce a technical and marketing collaboration with Flomerics Ltd, developer of the FLO/EMC computational electromagnetics software package.
Electromagnetic site survey measurement service
In response to the increasing demand for impartial measurements and advice, York EMC Services has launched an electromagnetic (EM) site survey service. Measurements can be made from just a few Hz to 18GHz and identify both potential sources of interference as well as risks to human health. Fourth consultation of the Business Test Panel reports
The Business Test Panel recently reported on proposals to modify the EMC Directive. The consultation [pdf] (53 kB) covers 566 business throughout the 10 Member States who responded to a questionnaire circulated during summer 2001. Amongst the findings, 64% of companies considered that incorporating the EMC guidelines into the new EMC Directive would provide simplification.

York EMC Services is pleased to announce the addition of Computational Electromagnetics (CEM) to its portfolio of training. “An introduction to Computational Electromagnetics” is a CD ROM based distance learning package covering both the fundamentals and the applications of CEM.
Strategic Review Panel reports on EMC harmonised standards
Set up as a result of the SLIM recommendations, the Strategic Review Panel (SRP) has published its report on the EMC standardisation system.
IEE publishes guidance document on EMC and functional safety
The IEE has recently published a guidance document entitled “EMC and Functional Safety”. The report highlights the fact that the EMC Directive does not specifically cover safety issues and goes on to suggest a number of ways in which EMC related functional safety issues might be controlled. The report also describes a number of examples of EMC related safety incidents.
