YES wins IEE award for the Advancement of Railway System Safety

[The IEE]

The Consultancy and Research Team at York EMC Services Ltd have won their fourth prestigious award in the last year, this time from the IEE for the Advancement of Railway System Safety.

The award went to the emiXpress emissions measurement system for measuring the radiated EM emissions from moving rail vehicles. The complex nature of a railway system leads to the potential for significant electromagnetic disturbances to be generated. These disturbances may cause interference to both radio based services as well as compromising the operation of essential railway equipment such as signalling systems.

Before the invention of emiXpress methods used for making railway EMI measurements only recorded the maximum level of interference seen. This novel award winning measurement system allows rapid yet detailed measurements to be recorded on the level, duration and nature of the interference generated - ultimately leading to improved railway safety.

YES staff were judged on not only the initiative and imagination shown in the design of the measurement system but also the impact of the development on the railway industry at large. Further, emiXpress demonstrates that there is the clear need for railway measurement system advancements.

This latest award was presented to YES engineers Andrew Rowell, Steve Seller and Didier Bozec at the IEE Railway Professional Network Annual Lecture and Dinner on 30 September 2004. emiXpress is available for use in YES testing and consultancy projects not only for the rail industry but has many applications in the avionics and automotive industries.
