Practical limits For EMC testing limits at frequencies above 1GHz Final Report

Summary

The need for serious consideration to be given to testing at higher frequencies has arisen because of the increasing use of the radio spectrum at microwave frequencies for services which are commonplace in the home and industry. Linked to this is the constant increase in speed of microprocessors and associated electronics. When the European EMC directive became mandatory in 1996 it was rare to see problems caused by clock harmonics at frequencies in excess of 500MHz. Now microprocessors are available with fundamental clock frequencies of more than 1GHz.

The purpose of this study was:

to investigate the behaviour of equipment at microwave frequencies and so to make recommendations for suitable test methods;
to consider various test environments to determine their suitability for performing these measurements;
and to investigate the radio services which might be affected to determine reasonable limits for test levels and frequencies.
