Generic standards re-numbering

Several years ago, it was decided that the existing numbering of the generic standards would be changed to fall into line with the new numbering system devised by CENELEC and the IEC. The new system sees the generic standards incorporated within the EN 61000 series of standards which most manufacturers will be familiar through the EN 61000-4-x series of basic standards. The generic standards will form the EN 61000-6-x series as summarised below.

Standard Title New number DOW
EN50081-1:1992 Emission requirements for the RCLI environment EN61000-6-3:2001 01/04/04
EN50081-2:1993 Emission requirements for the I environment EN61000-6-4:2001 01/04/04
EN50082-1:1997 Immunity requirements for the RCLI environment EN61000-6-1:2001 01/04/04
EN50082-2:1995 Immunity requirements for the I environment EN61000-6-2:1999 01/04/02
RCLI
residential, commercial and light industrial.
I
industrial.
DOW
Date of withdrawal of conflicting standards — essentially the date at which the newer version of the standard becomes mandatory.

Three of the four generic standards have two things in common. Firstly the DOW was in April 2004 and secondly that there are only minor changes between the different versions of the standards.

The fourth standard, Industrial Immunity (EN 50082-2:1995, now EN 61000-6-2:1999) differs in both respects. Firstly, the DOW was some 2 years before the others, being April 2002 and secondly there are significant changes to its requirements.

Because of the date of publication of EN 50082-2, some of the basic standards were either not published themselves or were not included. This was also the path taken by the RCLI immunity standard, EN 50082-1 when it was re-issued in 1997. It too incorporated the new basic standards developed since its original publication date of 1992.

A summary of the changes is given below. As always the actual standard should be consulted for the definitive requirements.
