In 1998, it was decided that the EMC Directive should be included in phase 3 of the SLIM programme. The Simpler Legislation for the Internal Market (SLIM) programme, as the name suggests, is designed to enable the simplification of European Union law.
A SLIM committee was set up consisting of ten independent experts with the aim of reviewing the Directive and identifying ways in which its application could be simplified. The result of the work was that the EMC SLIM report was published which identified 20 recommendations. Additionally the SLIM committee recommended that the European Commision should review the Directive as a whole.
The Commission endorsed the view of the committee and the process of revising the EMC Directive has reached the end of the first stage with the production of EMCD 2000.7. This and the other drafts are available as working documents for download.
It is important to note that these are working documents for discussion and are subject to change.
